TECHNIQUE, TECHNIQUE, TECHNIQUE!!! - TANGOS AND BULERÍAS-
BULERÍAS IMPROV ON WEDNESDAYS
FOOTWORK IMPROV WITH JOHN AMIRA ON SATURDAYS

As to the regular technique classes, we've finished the Guajira - very cool arrangement inspired by Farruquito that won Anthony Rosario 2nd place in the Inaugural New York State Flamenco Certamen!
We've been working on tangos for a while now: first my reconstruction of Macarrona's 1917 tangos, then Raquel Heredia's tangos de Granada. Now, we dial back to technique. We've been doing half the class on footwork, arms, and body, style, then moving into rhythm techniques with short phrases. I'm using tangos and bulerías as my focus: we're learning to improvise!
The cuadro class (Saturdays 6:00-7:00) will be focus on footwork improvisation. I am honored to have master drummer John Amira coming it to accompany the class. We'll sit in a circle and take turns dancing, working countertimes and playing with small patterns agains the compás, getting in and getting out without going out (of compás)! I will guide you towards thinking on your feet, and towards improvising. You should think of the hour as 6-10 minutes of dancing - very important - and the rest of the hour playing palmas for others - even more important! Because, as you know, if you can't play palmas, you can't really function as a professional. It's scary stuff but, as you know, we all work to make the circle a safe place to experiment and to learn without worrying about being perfect! New session soon. Sign up now!
I will also be teaching bulerías improvisation and structure on Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 - this is bulerías for EVERYONE - bulerías made simple and accessible.
All my classes are at Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana studios. It's a great space, a great location, and I'm so grateful to be there. These will be hour and a half classes: I'll spend the first hour working movement material and the last half hour running the choreography! We'll have a real mix of levels, which is fine because, as you all know, I give everyone something to chew on. Our goal will be to perform!
